Insurance For Travel Delays
Add another variation to the many types of insurance available for travelers: Travel Delay Protection, a plan for American Express cardholders that pays up to $200 a night for a hotel room if a trip is disrupted by a missed airline connection, delayed departure, canceled flight or denied boarding. The reimbursement, good for up to two consecutive nights, is provided only if the airline does not make onward transportation available by 11 p.m. the same day.
Once cardholders enroll in the plan by calling the number on the back of their cards, they are automatically billed $9.95 for each round-trip ticket charged to the card; call the same number to unenroll. One advantage of the Travel Delay Protection is that it allows participants to choose which hotel they stay in while waiting for the next available flight; when airlines do provide lodging after a flight delay, it is usually in a hotel that they choose.
Claims can be filed within six months of the disruption, and must be accompanied by a hotel receipt, the original and the new ticket stubs, and a copy of an American Express bill showing the ticket charge.
Delays due to weather and air traffic are covered; if passengers show up late for a flight because of highway traffic or a faulty alarm clock, they are out of luck. The plan is not available for corporate card holders.
